Presenting himself as someone on a peacekeeping mission in Russia, Gabriel Adam reportedly uses an overseas military story to appear credible. The account may begin with polite conversation and gradually become more personal or romantic. A deployment story can create sympathy while also explaining why the person cannot easily meet in person. The scammer may talk about loneliness, military duties, and plans for a future relationship. Trust may be strengthened through frequent messages and promises of eventually returning home. Later, the person may introduce expenses involving travel, leave, medication, or emergencies. The victim may be told that financial help is the only obstacle preventing a meeting.
