Reports :

TikTok was reportedly used to initiate contact with an individual calling himself Michael Smith. The account allegedly claimed to be a military servicemember deployed somewhere in Africa. Military photographs and deployment stories may have been used to make the profile appear credible. Restricted communication can also be used as an excuse for avoiding spontaneous video calls or identity verification. The scammer may gradually build an emotional or romantic relationship through regular messages. Once trust is established, financial problems connected to deployment may be introduced. Requests could involve travel, military leave, medical care, communication costs, or returning home. The victim may be told that payment is the final obstacle before they can meet.
