613-9028-4143 - Invoice scam - An invoice scam is a fraudulent scheme in which individuals or businesses are deceived into paying fake or inflated invoices for goods or services that were never provided or authorized. These scams typically involve scammers sending invoices via email, postal mail, or fax, impersonating legitimate suppliers, vendors, or service providers. The invoices may appear authentic, containing company logos, contact information, and details of purported products or services rendered. However, upon closer inspection, victims may discover discrepancies such as incorrect billing amounts, unauthorized charges, or nonexistent purchases. Scammers rely on the trust and familiarity associated with legitimate business transactions to trick victims into making payments, often using urgency or threats of penalties to pressure them into compliance. To avoid falling victim to invoice scams, individuals and businesses should verify the authenticity of invoices and the identity of the sender, cross-reference billing details with existing contracts or agreements, and establish internal controls to prevent unauthorized payments. Additionally, implementing cybersecurity measures such as email authentication and employee training on recognizing and reporting suspicious invoices can help mitigate the risk of falling victim to invoice scams.
