Social Security Administration Scam

The Social Security Administration (SSA) scam is a type of fraud that targets individuals by impersonating representatives from the SSA. Scammers use various tactics to trick victims into providing personal information or money. This scam has become increasingly common, and it's important to understand how it works and how to protect yourself.

ssa-scam

How the Scam Works:

  1. Initial Contact: Scammers typically contact their victims through phone calls, emails, or text messages. They often use caller ID spoofing to make it appear as though the call is coming from the SSA's official phone number.

  2. Threats and Urgency: The fraudsters usually claim that there is a problem with the victim's Social Security number (SSN) or account, such as it being suspended due to suspicious activity or linked to a crime. They create a sense of urgency and fear, warning that immediate action is required to avoid arrest or legal consequences.

  3. Request for Personal Information: The scammers then ask for personal information, such as the victim's SSN, date of birth, and bank account details, supposedly to verify their identity or to resolve the issue.

  4. Demand for Payment: In some cases, the scammers may demand payment to "unlock" or "reactivate" the victim's Social Security number. They often insist on unconventional payment methods, such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, which are difficult to trace and recover.

ssa-scam

How to Protect Yourself:

  1. Be Skeptical: Always be cautious of unsolicited calls or messages claiming to be from the SSA. The SSA will not contact you out of the blue to threaten you or demand money.

  2. Verify the Caller: If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the SSA directly using the official contact information found on their website (ssa.gov) to verify the legitimacy of the call.

  3. Guard Your Personal Information: Never provide personal information or financial details over the phone or via email to someone you don't know or trust.

  4. Know the Payment Red Flags: The SSA will never ask for payment in the form of gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or wire transfers.

  5. Report Scams:If you suspect you've been targeted by an SSA scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ftc.gov/complaint and to the SSA's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) at oig.ssa.gov.
