Scam Message:
Kortvon, whose real name is Ijeoma Okoro, was involved in a romance scam that targeted elderly victims through dating sites like Match.com and Zoosk. Okoro and her co-conspirators assumed fake identities and developed relationships with their victims, ultimately manipulating them into sending money under false pretenses, such as fabricated overseas work emergencies or family medical crises. The victims transferred thousands of dollars to bank accounts controlled by the scammers. Okoro was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison and ordered to pay over $2.2 million in restitution after being convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
The scam also implicated several other individuals, highlighting the extensive network involved in these fraudulent activities. The funds obtained were often laundered through various financial transactions, including import/export operations and currency exchanges.
