The scammers didn\u2019t just call or message us \u2014 <strong>they escalated<\/strong>, pushing the scheme further and further until they were ready to show up <strong>at our own home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when law enforcement stepped in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michigan State Police intercepted the person sent to collect our money \u2014 <strong>the suspected courier, _<\/strong>Yahui Zhu<strong>_<\/strong>, a 44-year-old woman from West Covina, California. She was arrested on <strong>January 16<\/strong> before the final cash exchange could take place, stopping us from losing even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Yahui Zhu<\/em><\/strong> is now being held in the <strong>Midland County Jail<\/strong> on a <strong>$500,000 bond<\/strong>, charged with <strong>false pretenses involving $20,000 or more<\/strong>. She was arraigned by Magistrate Gerald Ladwig and is scheduled for a <strong>probable cause hearing on February 3<\/strong> before Judge Michael Carpenter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators made it clear this was not a small mistake or misunderstanding. This was <strong>organized fraud<\/strong>. The scammers used fear, pressure, and deception \u2014 the same tactics being used <strong>across the state and across the country<\/strong>, especially against older victims like us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lieutenant Ashley Miller of the Michigan State Police confirmed that these scams are becoming more aggressive, with criminals now <strong>sending people in person<\/strong> to force victims into handing over cash. That\u2019s exactly what they tried to do to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, the troopers acted fast. Their intervention <strong>stopped the scam in progress<\/strong> and prevented us from losing everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And let this be said loudly and clearly \u2014 because this is how they trapped us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Federal Trade Commission will NEVER<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Threaten you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell you to move or \u201cprotect\u201d your money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask for <strong>gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash, or gold<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send anyone to your home to collect money<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who does <strong>any of that<\/strong> is not helping you.<br>They are <strong>stealing from you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t confusion.<br>This wasn\u2019t an accident.<br>This was a <strong>deliberate scam<\/strong>, and we were the targets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We never imagined this could happen to us.
