He told us our cryptocurrency was under immediate threat from hackers. He created fear, urgency, and panic \u2014 and then offered a \u201csolution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n That solution was a lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He instructed us \u2014 the victims<\/strong>, including police officers, single mothers, and everyday working people in California, Virginia, Pennsylvania<\/strong>, and beyond \u2014 to move our digital assets into a \u201csecure\u201d wallet. What he didn\u2019t tell us was that he controlled those wallets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The moment our funds were transferred, Ronald Spektor emptied them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our savings \u2014 years of work, retirement funds, emergency money \u2014 vanished. Prosecutors say he stole approximately $16 million<\/strong> from victims like us. While we were left financially devastated, he was gambling away millions online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And he wasn\u2019t quiet about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Using the online handle @lolimfeelingevil<\/strong>, Ronald Spektor<\/strong> openly bragged about robbing us. He even ran a Telegram channel called \u201cBlockchain enemies,\u201d<\/strong> where he mocked his crimes and admitted to losing $6 million of our stolen money<\/strong> while gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez<\/strong> said it best: this was no different than someone breaking into our homes and robbing us blind. That\u2019s exactly how it felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When authorities finally arrested Ronald Spektor on December 3<\/strong>, he pleaded not guilty to grand larceny and first-degree money laundering<\/strong> \u2014 despite overwhelming evidence. Prosecutors later revealed that he was allegedly planning to flee the country<\/strong>, discussing escape routes to Mexico, Canada, or the country of Georgia. He even sent $600,000 in cryptocurrency<\/strong> overseas as part of that plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Investigators discovered these escape attempts after seizing a new cellphone through a search warrant, uncovering text messages detailing his plans.
